Prof. Clauss is the Chairman and Director of the Institute of Animal Physiology at the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen since 1992. He served as the Dean of this University’s School of Biology from 1998-1999. He holds professorships both in the school of biology and the school of veterinary medicine.
Prof. Clauss, a native of Bietigheim, Baden-Württemberg, earned his degree in biology at the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim, where he studied zoology, zoophysiology, endocrinology and biophysics until 1975. Here, he pursued his scientific career enhanced with research electives at the Dept. of Physiology, Yale University, USA (1983-1984), in France (1976), England (1977), and Denmark (1985, 1986, 1987, 2000). He habilitated in 1985 on “Comparative studies of ion transport in vertebrates”. In the same year he accepted an appointment as associate professor at the Dept. of Veterinary Physiology, Free University of Berlin and directed the research at the laboratory of electrophysiology as a group leader for the following 5 years.
Prof. Clauss has made seminal contributions investigating the function of ion transport in various epithelia, especially alveolar epithelia. His reseach focusses on the hormonal regulation of ion channels and effects of high pressure respiration on ion transport.
He serves on the editorial boards of many scientific journals including the Editorial Board of Pflügers Archives - European Journal of Physiology, and the Journal of Comparative Physiology B, and is an active member of the international scientific advisory board of August Krogh Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Prof. Clauss is the an author, co-author, or editor of more than 100 scientific publications, and a textbook of zoology. He was elected as a member of the German Zoological Society (Spokesman 1991-1993), the German Physiological Society, the Society for Experimental Biology, the European Society for Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry and the American Physiological Society.
