Prof. Lohmeyer, a native of Jena, Thuringia, studied medicine at the Universities of Bonn and Giessen and earned his medical degree together with a dissertation award from the Justus-Liebig-University School of Medicine in 1979. After completion of his medical studies he held a 4-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Immunology in Munich sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG). He pursued his scientific career in internal medicine, haematology/medical oncology and infectious diseases at the University of Giessen and was awarded with the Justus-Liebig-University price in 1988. Recently, since 2004, he has accepted the responsibility to lead the section of infectious diseases.

Prof. Lohmeyer engaged in experimental medical research in the field of infectious diseases and immunology early on and has been continuously involved in lung research since 1991. He has been project leader within the Clinical Research Unit “Respiratory Insufficiency”, the Collaborative Research Group (Sonderforschungsbereich SFB ) 547, “Cardiopulmonary Vascular System” both funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German network for Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAPNETZ) and the National Genome Network (NGFN) both funded by the BMBF. In his research Prof. Lohmeyer has made significant contributions to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of leukocyte recruitment to the lung. He serves as an author, co-author and reviewer for numerous reknowned scientific publications, including variuos medical textbook articles.
